First Batch of Environments Concepts

So here is the first few concept paintings I've done in regards to a portfolio assignment I have to do. I'm making a 3D environment. I was initially going to do a jungle setting, but one of my teachers recommended I avoid doing that because the foliage would be a ton of work, so I went back to the drawing board and started playing around with some new ideas. I'll be making more today and possibly tomorrow, before I find one I really like. In the mean time, here is a few I made just recently!

Icy Fortress

Here is a landscape painting I did a few weeks ago for fun. I started this by taking two random colors from a photograph I liked and tried creating a new painting from them. I ended up with this icy world that reminds me of Bethesda's Skyrim. I'm happy with the results. =)

Snow Paintings

This is my first painting in quite a while! We had a bunch of snow fall today (although none of it stayed) and it put the inspiration in me to do a painting around that theme. I couldn't decide whether or not to add some wildlife into the shot, so I'll present to you both versions - one with a rabbit and one without! The merits and emphasis of the painting changes between them, so enjoy the one you like the most! All in all the background took about two and a half hours to do, and the rabbit took a little bit more! Enjoy!

Roo!

Here is a kangaroo character design I did the other day as practice. I intended on it just being a quick doodle but he ended coming out quite well, so I refined him some more and added color. The arm was very tricky to do, and I probably redrew it five times. A friend told me to widen it at the shoulder area, and that fixed it like magic. It's funny how a simple change like that can drastically make something better.

It's Been A While!

Last time I posted was back in September, right as I was starting my 2nd year of my course Digital Media Design. Phew, time flies by fast! I'm more or less graduated now from that course at Red River College! I've also since started my own website, which should be listed on the right side now. You can see my portfolio there too.

Going into this year I really thought it was going to be easier, because of the lesser amount of classes I had to worry about - but it turned out to be just as difficult. The projects while less in volume, were more demanding individually. It all felt a bit more competitive too. I may end up posting up some of the projects I did over the year, but they probably won't be in order. I'll just post whatever I get around to posting!

I should leave something nice here though. I ended up making a poster for Open House at Red River College, which is a get together of people in our industry from around the city to chit chat, have some good food and see the work of students. It was quite crowded, but it went great! There must have been 300+ people there, and the guest speaker was great as well.

In our room for Digital Media Design I had a poster up with a landscape I put together just for the poster. It had a link to my website and all that, but sadly the size difference between portrait-style posters and landscape-style posters was humongous. My poster ended up being 11x17, which is nothing to complain about, but if I had made something in portrait style, it would have been 34x22! I wish I had known that ahead of time - I could have fit a more diverse selection of work on it instead of just one thing. Ah well, so it goes.

Here is the poster I made. It had a link to my website on it as well for the final printout, but I haven't had anyone contact me about my work yet. Maybe we'll see what happens this summer?

Robot Silhouettes

Here are some robot character design silhouettes I did for the 3D major class I'm in. I haven't really drawn many robots, so I was quite happy when these started coming out believable and interesting. (To me anyway.) It's quite neat what a few scribbles can do.

I'm currently working on a model of the one with the red checkmark next to it. =)

Character Design

Here is a character design I did a while back that I neglected to post till now. He/she came out so fat! Would probably make for a good cuddly toy or something though, hehe. x)

Forest Background

Here is some forest scenery I made the other day, using brushes I made myself. I thought it came out pretty well! =D

Otter Design

This is the intro page to my children's book that I wrote and illustrated for one of my finals in college. He is the main character and I quite like how he came out. Sausagey! x)

Sunbeam

Here is a little photography I did a couple of weeks ago of my cat playing in a sunbeam. I took almost two dozen photos and this is the best one I got!

It's been partially edited. (Just color correcting, the text and clone-brushing away some trash in a garbage bin.)

Surreal Otter

This was an intentional departure from my normal style of artwork - and it was rather fun! It also sort of highlights that I need to use more textures in my artwork overall. This was inspired by a recent piece of artwork I saw and wanting to do my own take on it.

This is a logo I made for my children's book assignment for college. This wasn't required, but I thought it would add some authenticity. I quite like how it came out!

Tree Fortress

Here is a scene I painted for my final in art class! It's a depiction of a set piece in an animated movie storyline I'm writing. I thought it came out rather well giving how complicated it could get! Enjoy!

A Belated Christmas Celebration!

Could call it eight months early or four months late, but this was meant to be done back during the holidays. This is a gift for somebody I know, and I'm rather fond with how it came out! Enjoy!

I'm hoping to soon be able to add some fancy styling to this blog. I know it doesn't look very pretty right now with its grey, black, and some more grey, but I have a banner in the works and I'm also speculating over what kind of cool textures and colors I can give it. Stay tuned... both of you!

Radioactive Milk Design

A few weeks ago we had to do a drawing based on a news story for our illustration class, among a couple of other things. I chose the radioactive food situation in Japan and I am quite pleased with how the design came out! I thought I would share with all you awesome people. Enjoy!

It's a Portrait Study!

Here is a study I did this evening for practice. I liked how it turned out! I may go in and refine it later on when I have more time, we'll see. =) It's good practice nonetheless!

SJAC Logo Design

Here is a logo design I came up with for a senior centre here in the city. I chose a silhouette of a crane as I feel that was an animal personification of independence and personal well-being. The font is Century Gothic.

Frankly, I'm quite happy with how it turned out!

I may go back and do some small modifications, but I have so much work to do this weekend.

A Weeping Werewolf!

Tired of the same old "I'LL TEAR YOUR FACE OFF" look from werewolves? Now presenting "Desperately in Need of Anti-Depressants" werewolf!

I drew this yesterday for a school sketchbook assignment, took a digital picture of it, and colored it in Photoshop with a watercolor feeling. I really liked how it came out! I want to do more drawings in this style. It feels a lot more organic and tangible than my other stuff.

Speaking of more drawings, I expect to post some old pieces of work I've done here in the young days of this blog. (Aka. the next few weeks.) This place also desperately needs some customization and a banner.

PS. Don't ask why the werewolf is orange, it just looked nice, I swear!
